Lighting Legislation: The Basics in light bulb change and the effects on you

Lighting Legislation

Over the course of the next 3 years, you will begin to see the new lighting standards, set through the Energy Independence and Security Act, take place.

Between 2012 and 2014, standard 40- and 100-watt incandescent light bulbs must use 30% less energy to meet minimum efficient standards. Consumers will need to start transitioning to energy-efficient light bulbs for their lighting needs.

What does it all mean?

·         You are not required to throw out your existing bulbs.

·         Manufacturers simply can’t manufacture certain bulbs as time goes on.

·         There is a range of specialty incandescent bulbs that are exceptions, including 3-ways, reflectors, appliance bulbs and some decorative options.

·         Moving forward, you’ll choose from better technology like energy-efficient soft white, CFL and LED options.

Why?

According to the Department of Energy, lighting options such as Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs and Light-Emitting Diode (LED) bulbs are 75-80% more energy efficient and can last up to 25-times longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs.

This adds up to savings of approximately $6 a year in electricity costs per bulb and more than $40 over the lifetime of Energy Star qualified light bulbs — it also reduces the need to purchase light bulbs as frequently.

How less frequent?

Let me put it this way, A CFL in your first grader’s room is designed to last until she’s a teenager. An LED down light in your newborn’s nursery will last until he leaves for college.

While some of you may notice the initial price of the newer light bulbs is typically higher than the bulbs you are replacing, we guarantee you’ll spend less each year to operate them.

It is important to keep in mind that you want to buy the bulb that will cost you the least in the long run, not just the lowest first cost. New labeling requirements give you the information you need to compare bulbs true operating cost right on the front of the package

We feel it is important to keep our customers updated on these changes and provide them with the best products and information available when making this switch.

Helpful Tip – Winter Energy Efficiency

Winter Energy Efficiency – Tips for you Home

In today’s world we are all trying to be more energy efficient and save money while doing so. We have learned that not only can you save money but you can also improve performance when you take cost effective measures that make your home more energy efficient.

First and foremost, you want to target what envelopes your home such as walls, attics, windows and doors. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that a homeowner can save up to 20 percent on heating and cooling costs, or up to 10 percent of their annual energy bill by sealing and insulating in these areas alone.

  • ·         Insulate Walls and Attics – Effective insulation slows the rate that heat flows out of the house in winter, so less energy is required to heat the house. Add insulation to easily accessible areas. Attics are usually under-insulated, so adding blown-in material or batting helps reduce heat loss through your home’s ceilings. Also, insulate hot water pipes by wrapping insulation around the pipes to reduce cooling.
  • ·         Windows – Covering your windows with a thin sheet of plastic is an easy tip that goes a long way. Apply double sided tape to the window trim and install the plastic trim. Use a hair dryer to seal it tight. Also adding weather strips to both your doors and windows is a great way to keep the cold out and the heat in.
  • ·         Replace Light Bulbs – Compact Fluorescent Lamps can save three-quarters of the electricity used by incandescent. Making this switch will allow for 70 percent more energy and last up to 10-times longer than the standard incandescent light bulbs that are commonly used.
  • ·         Change furnace filters - Do this monthly to ensure it runs more efficiently and use pleated filters to improve indoor air quality, especially during winter months when you are indoors more.
  • ·         Install a programmable thermostat – you will reduce heat generation during the night or when away from the house.
  • ·         Window blinds - Leave blinds up during sunny days to draw in the sun’s rays and down on shady days to protect against infiltration of cold air. Likewise, close them at night to keep the heat in.
  • ·         Caulking air leaks- Seal air leaks with caulking, including around pipes, dryer vents, windows and doorframes, as well as other areas through which cold air can infiltrate.

For more energy saving tips and a large line of products, visit us at Steinacker & Sons Hardware. With knowledgeable associates always on hand, we will keep you warmer this winter and save you money.

Install a Ceiling fan; Save heat, AC and energy costs all year round

Installing a ceiling fan can seem like a daunting task; however, you will find that if all the wiring is in place, installing a ceiling fan should be quite easy. Below you will find some important information in regards to installing a ceiling fan. Before getting started there are some items you may want to take into consideration. The size and style of the fan you choose will be very important with respect to installing a ceiling fan. In order to choose the correct fan, you’ll need to know the size of the room, as well as the type of ceiling you have.

Some people have vaulted ceilings which can make it difficult for installing a ceiling fan of a larger size. It will also make it difficult to position the fan properly if your ceiling is vaulted. Once you have selected the correct type of fan for your ceiling, it will be time to get started. With this tutorial of installing a ceiling fan, if you’ve never installed a lighting fixture before, you’ll want to pay close attention to the instructions listed below.

Installing a Ceiling Fan

Pre-Installation:

1. Turn off the power – This is probably the most important step when it comes to removing or installing electrical fixtures. It will be important that you follow this procedure as closely as possible. Do not just turn off the light switch that controls the light. You will want to turn off the breaker that controls the light in the room you plan on installing a ceiling fan.

2. Removing the old light fixture – This process should be done in the middle of the day so you can open your blinds or window shades in order to allow for enough light. Depending on the type of fixture you’re going to remove, it’s a matter of disassembling your old fixture and removing it from the light electrical box.

3. Disconnecting the wires – You want to make sure that you disconnect the wires from the old assembly, but make sure you marked each wire as to its proper location. This will make it easier when installing a ceiling fan.

4. Inspect the old electrical box – Make sure the electrical box that is currently installed can handle the fan weight and is mounted to either a truss, or a cross brace. This will ensure that when you install your new fan that it will have a proper foundation in order to work properly. If for some reason your electrical box is not mounted properly, it will be important for you to get the correct electrical box and mounting brace. When installing a ceiling fan weight will be an important factor, choose wisely.

Installing a Ceiling Fan

Installation:

Before getting started on installing a ceiling fan, make sure you read through the directions that come with your new fan. You will be surprised at how easily you will recall this information during the installation process. Make sure you have everything laid out in a way that you can select each item as you move along.

5. Installing a ceiling fan mounting bracket – The first thing you want to do is install the new mounting bracket onto the electrical box. This mounting bracket is what will actually hold the new fan.

6. Use the working hook – Because of the weight of a ceiling fan motor, the manufactures are well aware that you can’t hold the ceiling fan motor in one hand and secure the wiring with the other. So they’ve made something that’s called a “working hook”, which allows you to hang the fan motor on the hook while you are assembling the wiring.

7. Matching and securing the wires – In the step you will secure the wiring using the proper color codes. In the US, the white wire will be the neutral, the black wire will be a hot or (power leg) and the copper or green wire will be the ground. Sometimes we’ll see a red wire which is considered a loop depending on how many light switches control a single light. Typically when you see this wire you have multiple light switches within one configuration. Just make sure to follow the wiring exactly as you remove the old fixture and you shouldn’t have a problem.

8. Secure the fan motor – It’s time to secure the fan motor to the fan mounting bracket. You want to push all the wiring inside the electrical box, and then secure the fan motor to the mounting bracket with the mounting bolts that have been supplied.

9. Install fan blades – After mounting the fan motor and putting on the cover, it will be time to install the fan blades. One by one attach each blade and secure with the accompanying hardware. Make sure that each fan blade is installed properly because you do not want your fan to be unbalanced.

10. Check your work – Once you’ve completed the installation, it’s time to turn our back on to check your work. Make sure that your light switch is turned off, and go out and turn your break your back on, and when you return to the room turn your light switch on and make sure your fan works properly as well as your lights.

Installing a ceiling fan is not as difficult as one may think. The biggest intimidation is when a person thinks about working with electricity. As long as your electricity is off, it’s a matter of disassembling the current fixture and replacing it with a fan of your choice. Follow these steps closely and you will see that once your ceiling fan has been installed, you’ll be able to enjoy the new air circulation, as well as the fact that you performed the installation.

Painting Your Home? – Our Steps and Preparation For Best Results

Exterior house painting starts with systematic preparation of all surfaces to be painted. Here are some simple guidelines and things to look for before continuing with the painting process.

Thoroughly inspect your home completely before moving on. This will prevent, if any, further damage to your home. Look for signs of blistering, peeling or chalking on the paint of your home. Water damage shows as rot or discolored areas. These problems will need to be properly fixed before moving ahead into the project. Mildew and mold are also other problems one may encounter while fixing up the home. After each repair, take further steps to prevent any more damage from occurring.

Often, exterior house painting preparation requires more effort and time because the exterior of any house receives more damage due to sunlight, which causes paint to fade and wood to warp, and weather, which can cause mildew and mold and other kinds of damage.

First, start with pressure washing to remove dirt and to make sure the surface is clean. Usually after pressure washing, you can begin repairs depending on the severity of the damage. If the damage is already apparent, make the repairs as soon as possible. However, most of the damage is noticeable after pressure washing. After washing and all repairs, move onto scraping and sanding.

Caution must be taken in this stage due to environmental and physical concerns. For example: if your house was built and finished before 1980, it is possible that your finish may contain lead based paint. Find out what you need to do and what not to do in those cases. It’s better to be safe than sorry especially when it comes to your own health and home.

—————————————————-

A clean, washed surface is key for best results.  Did you know that Steinacker & Sons Ace Hardware RENTS power washers?

—————————————–

Apply a high quality primer to all raw areas after scraping and sanding. As you continue further on, you may need to apply caulking to seal any areas where water can leak. Pay special attention to windows and doors.

—————————————————-

Primer Tip – Paint does not replace primer.

Many times our clients assume that they can by-pass the purchase of a primer and instead  will “just do 2 coats” of paint.  Primer creates a bonding surface for paint to adhere to.  It is  essential for a quality, long lasting finished product.

—————————————–

Now mask or cover any areas where you do not wish for paint to go. Masking paper and tape should be used instead of news paper. A hand held masking machine will make this task easier. This is as important as the rest of the preparation. If not done correctly, the entire exterior painting job can be severely affected.

If you chose to hire a professional painting contractor to do the job, make sure that proper exterior paint preparation and repairs is included with the contract proposal. This makes it easier on you so you do not have to go and find a repair contractor. It also makes it easier on the contractor. If they know what kind of repairs might take place, they can find out whether or not they need a building permit with inspection.

If all of the exterior house painting steps are followed and all repairs made, your new finish can last beautifully for many years. Quality always saves money in the long run.

Home Remedies for Your Pets – Summer Tips for Pet Health

The summer months can be a difficult time for our pets, especially if they are prone to getting fleas. Flea bites are painful and annoying. Luckily, there are many effective flea control products on the market today. Your veterinarian can help you pick the commercial product(s) best suited to your pet, your climate, and your circumstances.

—————————————————-

There are many great pet products available.  Ask one of our local, knowledgeable associates for the best product for your pet’s well being and also be sure to check out our great line of Sport Mix dog and cat foods as well as our assortment of grooming products, leashes, collars, treats, chews, rawhide and more!

—————————————–

But have you tried any of these traditional treatments?

Garlic: If your pet will tolerate it, add a touch of garlic juice to the drinking water. It is also effective to place a few cloves of garlic in the bedding.

Lemons: Mix a tablespoon of reconstituted lemon juice into a spray bottle full of water and spritz directly onto your pet’s coat.

Yeast: Add a few spoonfuls of brewer’s yeast to your pet’s food bowl daily. This treatment works very well but it is definitely not for the finicky eater.

Vinegar: Add a little vinegar to your pet’s fresh water bowl during the hot summer months. Apple cider vinegar is often very well tolerated, but any type of vinegar will work. Also, a vinegar rinse with doggie’s refreshing bath will add shine to his coat while helping to ward off fleas.

If fleas also like to bite you, as well as your pet, simply add yogurt to your summer snack foods. Fleas do not like the taste of Vitamin B1 in the skin. Yogurt will help keep plenty of Vitamin B1 in your skin so you won’t be so tasty to the fleas!

How Avoid Major Clogs – Our Drain Cleaning Tips

It can be a source of great irritation and annoyance to constantly have to wait for a sink or tub to empty itself of water. If clogs get bad enough, the water may never dissipate. It’s at that point that you have to either do something about it yourself or hire an expensive drain cleaning service. While it can be an overall boost to your plumbing system to have professionals come out and clean out your pipes, it isn’t something you want to do because you failed to adhere to some basic maintenance tips. Maintaining your plumbing doesn’t need to be difficult or expensive. Here are some tips you can use to avoid major clogs.

—————————————————-

Drain Maintenance is KEY to a fluid working drain.  If you DO have clogs, REMEMBER YOU CAN RENT drain cleaning equipment from Steinacker & Sons Ace Hardware if the tips below do not solve your problem.

—————————————–

Keep Your Stopper Clean

Most sinks and tubs are fitted with a metal stopper that allows you to stop the flow of water down the pipes when you need to do so. But these stoppers are also a common source of clogs. Hair and other forms of debris have a tendency to get wrapped around the plug and can prevent water from flowing freely. Examine your stopper every now and then and clean out some of this debris. Hair, especially, is a common source of problems.

Dispose of Your Grease Elsewhere

It’s the easiest thing to do to just pour your grease right down the kitchen sink. Unfortunately, doing that on a regular basis can and will bring your pipes to a standstill. Grease will cool quickly and when it does, it turns into a white, congealed mess that will stick to the edges of your pipes. Most drain cleaning specialists will tell you that this is one of the most common problems they run into. Instead of pouring grease down the sink, pour it into a jar or can and throw it in the trash.

Use Your Hot Water

One thing many homeowners have found success with is getting into the habit of pouring hot water down the sink every week or so. For best results, actually boil some water on the stove so that it’s hot enough to get rid of some of the stickier substances on the edges of your pipes. While this may not be enough to clear major clogs, doing it on a regular basis could prevent them from forming in the first place.

Avoid Chemicals

While more expensive, you may be better off hiring drain cleaning specialists than buying chemicals at the store for clogs. These chemicals work, but they also damage your pipes with their corrosive nature. Using them occasionally isn’t so bad, but if you’re in the habit of using them often, you should contact a plumber.

How To Plan and Implement Your Own Private Herb Garden

The very first step to consider is utilizing your imagination. By free form thinking you can conceptualize your design before committing to planting any seeds. In this way you can essentially map out a few options before deciding on the perfect choice.

Not sure how to begin?

Your practice layout should include any plants already existing in your garden that you’ll need to incorporate.

Then think about those edifices such as decks, patios or fences that are stationary. You will need to plan your garden around items that are fixed. The type of flowers and plants already existing in the garden should not be a hindrance to the health of your herb garden, such as blocking sunlight, water requirements and shade.

For example, it would not be wise to plant an imposing oak tree near your patio or construct a fence where the roots would disrupt it. Likewise you should take the same care when planning your herb garden.

Your next step is to determine your landscaping theme. What look are you hoping to achieve with your garden? Will it be round, square, interspersed with other garden elements are potted so they can be rearranged?

—————————————————-

Start you garden with quality Burpee seeds or our fresh live herb from Bonnie Plants and the finest organic soils always available at Steinacker & Sons Hardware.  Ask one of our local, knowledgeable associates for the best products and tips for your  projects.

—————————————–

As you determine the look of your garden now is the time to put a discerning eye on those areas of your garden that may require a bit of sprucing up. You’ll need to consider soil preparation, water availability and drainage.

Just think about those future mornings and quiet evenings as you sit out on your patio and enjoy the fruits of your labor. As you enjoy your beverage of morning coffee or evening cocktail you can also enjoy the delectable aromas of your garden.

So don’t forget to include elements in the garden that will attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, if you want to create that sort of atmosphere.

Think about the types of floral and fauna that are indicative to the four seasons of your particular state. Spring and summer you can look forward to abundant blooms of flowering plants. What sort of scene scape do you desire during the autumn season?

On paper you can map out ideas that involve fall blooming plants such as sweet autumn clematis, aster or toad lily to name a few. These plants provide your garden with an array of jewel toned blooms that brighten up any garden at this gloomy time of year.

Sketch out the borders of your garden. Each drawn square symbolizes one foot of the garden. If you have difficulty visualizing this concept there are free programs online that can help with your planning. Just do a search on garden landscaping and tool around until you find what you need.

If you plant a variety of shrubs, perennials and herbs remember to leave room. Crowding is one of the most common mistakes beginners make when planning the garden.

Remember the goal is to have an herb garden that is functional and pleasing to the sight and smell. Choose your herbs carefully; being sure to include the ones you’ll use most.

While most herbs flourish anywhere they are planted understand how the varieties you chose grow. If they spread give them space in the corner of the garden to do so. If they grow tall, be sure they are in the back of the garden. If you like the scents and blooms mix them accordingly.

An herb garden can be an envious plot in the entire garden when you plan beforehand.

Gutters – Why Cleaning Them is Imperative to Maintaining Your Home

Cleaning the exterior of your home during your spring cleaning is just as important at it is to clean the interior, but it’s something that most homeowners either don’t think about or just don’t bother doing. The next time you clean out your closets and clear out items you no longer use, consider turning your efforts to your home’s exterior and cleaning out your gutters.

Why Is It Important To Clean

How come it’s important to do this task? After all, doesn’t a gutter simply collect water so that it can safely run down your home? While it’s true that they primarily collect water, leaves, twigs and other debris could collect, which could cause water to sit and become stagnant in them. The stagnant water can cause rust damage or it can become a haven for pests such as mosquitoes. Additionally, any debris could become lodged in the downspouts, which could lead to a big irrigation problem during a heavy rain.

At Steinacker & Sons Ace Hardware we offer quality, top line brands and products.  Stop in today and let one of our local, knowledgeable staff answer  all your home repair questions.

—————————————–

How To Clean Gutters

The easiest time to clean out a gutter is right after (not during!) a rain. The rain will help any packed leaves and twigs dislodge and make this an easier job. Start with the area around the downspout first and check to make sure that there aren’t any corroded spots, holes, dents or sagging or leaking areas. It’s a good idea to mark these spots instead of stopping to fix them on the spot.

If you do have a clogged downspout, run a garden hose up the spout. The water pressure will usually loosen anything that’s stuck in there. Running the water down the spout will typically only pack in the debris further, making your job even harder. If this doesn’t work, a plumber’s snake can also work.

After it is cleaned, run clean water through to make sure that everything is draining well. Standing water is one of the biggest causes of problems so take the time to make sure you’re not leaving your home susceptible to problems. Typically, homeowners can adjust the slope simply by bending the hangers, however sometimes they’ll need to be replaced. Also look out for rust. If you find that your gutters have rusted through, you might need to contact a gutter company that can handle gutter replacement for you.

It’s important to clean out your gutters at least twice a year. Don’t neglect this important task because by doing that, you could find yourself needing a gutter company to come and do a complete gutter replacement on your house. A little preventative care goes a long way so take the time to do it right.

Mulching: Maintaining Your Lawn with Grass Recycling

“Grass-cycling” or mulching your lawn with grass cuttings is very important to sustainable lawn maintenance. When mulching you are reintroducing nutrients back into the grass and not contributing to landfills. Keep in mind that you have to cut your lawn more often in order for this to work. Many people believe that mulching a lawn causes thatch, this is incorrect. When done properly it helps fertilize the lawn.

The ideal technique would be to cut the lawn on a dry day and remove no more than one third of the grass blade. To do this I recommend a mulching mower. A mulching mower works by suspending the cut grass tip in the air, which the lawnmower blade then cuts into many fine pieces and shoots back into the lawn as a recyclable product. This speeds up the lawn mowing process since you don’t have to bag the grass.

In the last several years there are some terrific new rechargeable recycling lawnmowers. This is allowing many people who were not able to before, to cut their own lawn, while saving a considerable amount of money.

Remember to keep your mulching lawnmower blade sharp. This will prevent disease from entering the cut part of the grass blade and will ensure proper mulching technique. Good luck!

Fertilizing for Lawn Health:

Fertilizing your lawn for sustained health consists of using organic fertilizers and/or slow release synthetic fertilizers. It does not include ‘weed in feeds’ although, when addressing weed issues, it is okay to spot spray individual weeds. The reason slow release fertilizers are used is to control the growth habit of the lawn. For instance, you would not want to use a quick release fertilizer in the spring. When it is warm and rainy it causes the grass to grow too quickly and you can’t cut wet lawn using a recycling lawnmower.

Slow release fertilizers may cost a little more, but in the long run they are less expensive. The fact is, they last longer and require less effort with fewer applications. I personally like the combination of using synthetic and organic fertilizers. It is important not to mow your lawn too soon after applying your synthetic fertilizer. The lawnmower will cut or fracture the fertilizer, destroying the slow-release technology. You should wait one full week after application to cut your lawn.

Organic fertilizers improve the quality of your soil. If you take care of your soil, it takes care of your lawn, reducing problems and cost. Please remember, that most of your higher quality organic fertilizers have a very strong smell, so take this into consideration when planning. Organic fertilizers have a temperature window between 55 and 75°F.
